Oltre 3.000 spettatori in quattro giorni. Di Paola: «Un orgoglio»
Castiglione della Pescaia (GR), 9 luglio – Il sogno dell’Italia è svanito sul più bello. È la Germania a laurearsi campione d’Europa femminile di polo per la seconda volta nella sua storia. Il 6-2 a Punta Ala sulle Azzurre regala un successo nel Ladies FIP European Polo Championship – Trofeo U.S. Polo Assn. già ottenuto nel 2018. Per la squadra di coach Franco Piazza l’inevitabile delusione per la sconfitta – arrivata dopo i successi di giovedì contro l’Inghilterra e di sabato contro la Francia – ma anche la consapevolezza di essere ancora ai vertici del polo europeo, tanto che il pubblico arrivato in massa al Centro Ippico (oltre 3.000 presenze nelle tre giornate di gara) alla fine ha riservato un lungo applauso alla squadra e allo staff guidato dal capo équipe Alessandro Giachetti.
Resta il successo organizzativo per l’evento che la Federazione Internazionale Polo ha assegnato alla Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri e che si è giocato nel club che Gaia Bulgari, con il suo lavoro, ha riportato ai fasti del passato. «Lo sport regala gioie ma anche dispiaceri – le parole del presidente della Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri, Marco Di Paola –. Oggi speravamo di vincere: l’Italia ha combattuto ma la Germania è stata superiore, quindi è giusto così. Ci tengo però a dire che oggi ha vinto soprattutto lo sport: sono stati quattro giorni esaltanti». Parole, quelle di Di Paola, condivise anche dal segretario generale Simone Perillo: «Restano le grandi emozioni vissute qui, ma anche una medaglia d’argento prestigiosa per la Nazionale e per tutta la Federazione. Siamo orgogliosi di aver contribuito all’organizzazione di una straordinaria festa di sport».
A premiare le squadre che hanno partecipato alla quarta edizione del Ladies FIP European Polo Championship – Trofeo U.S. Polo Assn., il sindaco di Castiglione della Pescaia Elena Nappi: «Quando sono approdata a Punta Ala per la prima volta, negli anni ’90, i campionati italiani di settembre erano il punto di riferimento dello sport. Grazie a Gaia Bulgari, questo evento e quello organizzato un anno fa hanno rappresentato un momento di rinascita. L’exploit europeo è degno dei tre grandi volani di Punta Ala: il polo, il golf e il porto». Ad accompagnare la premiazione, anche la Fanfara a cavallo della Polizia di Stato.
La Federazione Internazionale Polo ha potuto quindi apprezzare gli sforzi organizzativi: «È bellissimo essere qui a Punta Ala – ha sottolineato il presidente Piero Dillier –. Ho giocato qui 40 anni fa e abbiamo assistito a un evento splendido. Speriamo di restare in Italia per quanto riguarda i tornei: nel 2024 ci auguriamo di poter organizzare il Mondiale femminile a Villa a Sesta e di continuare a supportare gli eventi internazionali organizzati dalla Federazione Italiana Sport Equestri sul territorio nazionale».
«Ci tengo a ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno contribuito all’organizzazione di questa manifestazione – ha spiegato Gaia Bulgari, presidente del Centro Ippico Punta Ala, accolta al momento della premiazione dall’ovazione del pubblico –. Senza il lavoro di squadra, tutto quello che abbiamo vissuto in questa settimana non sarebbe stato possibile».
LA PARTITA La Germania è partita meglio, trovando il primo gol del match grazie a Marie-Luise Haupt nel primo chukker e il raddoppio nel secondo. Di Alice Coria il primo gol delle Azzurre, che si sono però di nuovo trovate sotto prima di due, poi addirittura di tre gol (due centri su punizione di Eva Bruhl, nominata miglior giocatrice del torneo). A guidare la reazione dell’Italia, il 2-4 di Camila Rossi, ma poco dopo è arrivato il quinto gol delle tedesche (sugli sviluppi di un episodio contestato dalle italiane), con il 2-6 di Haupt nel finale che ha chiuso i giochi.

From Wednesday 5th to Sunday July 9th, the fourth edition of European
Polo Championship. Italy want to confirm their 2021 title
Castiglione della Pescaia (GR), 30 June – Last September, with the Punta Ala Polo Cup,
the historic polo field – witness for decades to the exploits of great sportsmen and VIPs as
far as the British royal family – in Castiglione della Pescaia shone once again. It was the
draft for the Ladies FIP European Polo Championship – U.S. Polo Assn. Trophy, scheduled
from Wednesday 5 to Sunday July 9th and which will see four national teams on court:
Italy, England, Germany, and France. At the Centro Ippico Punta Ala, which thanks to the
work and passion of Gaia Bulgari has returned to its former splendour and to hosting
international polo events after 30 years, everything is ready for the arrival of the
delegations taking part in a competition – the IV Ladies FIP European Championship 2023
- that the International Polo Federation has assigned to FISE (Italian Equestrian Sports
Federation). As always, it will be a sustainable event, in line with the principles behind the
redevelopment of the area that will host the tournament. And there is a very welcome
surprise: there is a free entry to the Centro Ippico Punta Ala, with fans that will have the
chance to closely follow a show in a breathtaking location in the heart of the Maremma.

«When, in 2019, I took over the Centro Ippico Punta Ala to bring it back to its former glory,
I did it because it was an affair of the heart – added Gaia Bulgari, president of the Centro
Ippico Punta Ala –. This place has linked with my life in a thousand ways, and the polo
field, has been a bit of a ‘desktop’ of mine, a witness to the wonderful years I lived here.
Recovering it and transforming it once again into a place of sport for those who, like me,
love horses, was only natural. Four years later, we are here for a women’s polo European
Championship, an event that gives meaning to all the things and sacrifices my team and I
have made, even during the difficult years of the pandemic».
THE TOURNAMENT There will be three days of competition, with the matches set to start
at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. It will starts on Thursday 6th, with the draw that composed the draw
for the opening matches: Italy, led by coach Franco Piazza and head coach Alessandro
Giachetti, will face England, while the other challenge will be between France and
Germany. Alice Coria, Maitena Marrè, Camila Rossi and Ginevra Visconti are the players
chosen to wear the ‘Azzurri’ jersey. The teams will come back to the court on Saturday 8th,
with the day 2 in which the winning teams in the first match will meet the losers. On
Sunday 9th, the finals – of which RaiSport will broadcast a resume in the days following the
event – and the prize-giving ceremony. The four federations have submitted a list of 10
players each, but four girls will take the field. For England Kristina White, Beanie Bradley,
Rosanna Turk and Rebecca Walters. For Germany Clarissa Marggraf, Marie Haupt,
Svenja Hölty and Eva Brühl. For France, sisters Lucie and Pearl Venot, Margaux
Perruchot and Ambra Ploix.
ITALY TROPHY-OLDER The one scheduled in Punta Ala will be the fourth edition of the
Ladies FIP European Polo Championship. The first was held in 2017 in Chantilly (France),
with the triumph of Italy, which finished second behind Germany the following year in Villa
Sesta, also in Tuscany like Punta Ala. In 2021, the first year in which the European
Championships counted as qualifiers for the Women’s World Championships, Italy won its
second gold medal in Milan, before finishing fourth in the World Championships in
Argentina.
THE PARADE The start of the competitions will be preceded, on the afternoon of
Wednesday 5, by the parade of the horses and the athletes taking part in the European
Championships at the Marina of Punta Ala, enriched by the presence of vintage cars and
in which Sandra Mucciarini, Councillor of the Municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, will
also participate. The parade will be followed by an aperitif at the Punta Ala Yachting Club.
THE EVENTS The five-day programme in Punta Ala is full of events that will complete the
European Championship calendar. On Friday evening, at the Gallia on the Beach, a
Charity dinner is scheduled to raise funds in favour of the Operation Smile Italia ETS
Foundation. On Sunday there will be the closing dinner on “La Vela” restaurant.
